About Buenos Aires

Where is it?

Buenos Aires is the capital city of Argentina. Its exact location is at 34º 36' latitude and 58º 26' longitude. It has 19.4 km from north to south and 17.9 km from east to west. Three million people live in its 202 km2 but together with the metropolitan area, Buenos Aires population goes up to 11 million, which makes it one of the ten most populated cities in the world. It's about eleven hours away by plane from New York, Paris or Madrid.

Buenos Aires is a cosmopolitan eclectic city that surprises with its contrast of melancholic tango neighbourhoods and modern high-rises. The city is huge and diverse, showing a great variety of cultures and habits inherited from the different immigrants who arrived after World War.

From its exquisite cuisine to a never ending nightlife, from a vast cultural offer to a wide range of sports, from a lovely European-style architecture to an incredible shopping experience, Buenos Aires has something for everyone on any budget.

Buenos Aires is connected with the rest of the country and the world through a wide transport network, having two airports (one for international flights located at 22 km from the city centre and the other, for domestic flights, located just at 6 km from the city centre), a port which receives cruises and ferries, an extended train system, a complex bus system and many highways and national routes.

What's the weather like down there?

The weather in Buenos Aires is practically good all year round. Average annual temperature is 18ºC, which makes it nice to walk around any time of the year.

Winter begins on June 21 and ends on September 20. The coldest month is July, with an average temperature between 3ºC and 8ºC. Warm clothes like jacket, overcoat and scarf are recommended.

Summer begins on December 21 and ends on March 20. This period is humid and hot, with an average temperature of 28ºC. The hottest month is January. Light clothes are common, even at night, when temperatures are still mild.

The annual rain average is 1146mm. Rain is more frequent during Autumn (March 21 to June 20) and Spring (September 21 to December 20). During warm months, rain is usually short.

 Interesting Stuff

  • It never snows in Buenos Aires. Only once, in 1918, the city was covered with a slight white snow.

  • Some weather phenomena became part of the local culture:

  • 'Veranito de San Juan' (Saint John's Little Summer), so called because it's a mild period of three to seven days which often starts around June 24 (Saint John the Baptist's Day). Temperature rises to almost 24ºC, something really uncommon for wintertime.

  • 'Tormenta de Santa Rosa' (Saint Rose's Storm) is a short period of intense rain and thunderstorm which usually starts around August 30 (Saint Rose's Day) and lasts only for one or two days.
